Dr. Joanna Yul Women's History Month

Today, for the Women’s History Month, we are celebrating this fantastic woman

Meet Joanna Yu, 49, wife, mother of two, Orthodontist, Owner of Adult & Pediatric Orthodontics.

“Teamwork makes the Dreamwork”

Joanna was born in Shanghai, China. In 1985, she immigrated to America, along with her parents. They settled in Portland, Oregon while her father, an Chinese Engineer, attended Graduate School. Her mother, who was formally trained Theater Actress, waitressed in local Chinese restaurant to support family. Joanna was highly motivated student in high school. She received a scholarship to attend Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. She graduated with Bachelor Degree in Biology. Her interest in pursuing a career in health care led her to Boston, MA. She completed her doctorate at Tufts Dental School with highest honor. To further her training, she received post-doctoral degree in the specialty of Orthodontics.

In 2003, Joanna & her husband, Alex, a classmate & general dentist, moved to Falmouth, Maine. She joined Adult & Pediatric Orthodontics, an established practice founded by Dr. Earl Holdsworth. After his retirement, she became solo practitioner, serving the orthodontic needs in the Greater Portland Area. 4 years later, Joanna became a mother to a wonderful son, Vincent, who joined by a younger brother, Adrian, 3 years later. The family enjoys spending time together cooking, playing tennis and travel.

For 20 years, she’s passionate about her job, creating beautiful and healthy smiles for her patients. More importantly, she cherish the personal connections that she shares with each family. As an entrepreneur and clinician , she continues to innovate and grow the practice to meet the community’s needs.

One of the biggest challenge as a career woman is to balance work and family life. Joanna’s advice to others women is “Be your authentic self and have the confidence to pursue your goals. Surround yourself with positive people who uplift you, both personally & professionally" - “Teamwork makes the Dreamwork” She’s grateful for all those who continue to support her success.
