Mary Taggart I Women's History Month

Today for the 17th day of the "Women's History Month" project, we are celebrating this fantastic, energetic and free spirited woman

Meet Mary Taggart, 58, a wife, mother, grandmother, writer, and owner of the "Ottawa at Home" magazine.

Mary is from Ottawa, Canada, but she grew up spending her summers in Ocean Park and continues to do so and considers it to be her second home.

Mary attended the University of Ottawa where she received her degrees in English and Education. She also studied Residential Decor at Algonquin College.

Mary is a writer and owns a lifestyle and decor publication called "Ottawa at Home" magazine ( https://www.ottawaathome.ca ). She bought the magazine in 2017 when the former owner was selling it. She has been working as the Editor in Chief for many years and knew she didn’t want to go to work for someone else. "It was either I own it or I quit a job that I loved", says Mary. So she bought it and started a media company called Ottawa at Home media. She never saw herself in an entrepreneurial position but she quickly learned that combining her creative brain with her desire to succeed helped her to understand the business behind creativity. "I am never afraid to admit what I don’t know and will always surround myself with good strong people". She believes that a true leader is one that lets people shine and encourages others to find their success. She is rooted in the belief that she knows a lot about some things and not very much about a lot of things, but she knows how to find the experts to support her endeavors.

What are your greatest achievements:

"My greatest achievement is my family. I am married to a man I fell in love with at the age of thirteen and we have four children who are creating family lives of their own and that makes me very happy. We now have two grandchildren."

Mary added fiction writing into her career in June of 2019 and this has become a passion of hers. All of her writing reflects her strong connection to home and family.

From a tangible perspective she values her place in Maine most. "The ability to head to a spot that I have been coming to since I was a child and be with people who have known me for most of my life in a place that has stayed almost the same for the entire time I’ve been going is a gift I do not take for granted. To be able to share this with my family is truly priceless," says Mary.

Advice for other women:

"Women need to know that life is ever evolving, We are growing and changing and all of the experiences we have add up to creating the person we are becoming. There is always a new career, a new adventure or an experience waiting for us around every corner. Keep your eyes and mind open to the possibilities that are waiting for you in life. This won’t happen without your drive to go out and reach for what you want and hunt for what’s out there. The world is waiting, failure is always on the edge of something new but it also leads to success."
