Stacee McKenzie - Women's History Month

Today, for the Women's History Month project, we are celebrating this gorgeous, sweet and kind woman

Meet, Stacee McKenzie, 49, mother of 2, Mary Kay consultant and an inspiring believer...

Hello, my name is Stacee McKenzie. I am originally from Massachusetts, from a small town called Rutland, MA. My father owned a landscaping business, and we owned ten beautiful acres where he grew blueberries and trees. When I was 16, I lost my father unexpectedly to a massive heart attack when he was only 39 years old. My mother was suddenly a single mom, with me and my two younger sisters to care for. Life was very hard for a long time. When I was 18, I was accepted into Westfield State College as an English major, but I never attended. The painful trauma of losing my dad was too much emotionally for me to focus on getting my education at that time. Instead, I obtained a retail job at the mall. I loved my job and my coworkers, and found I enjoyed being in a service industry helping people. When I was 20 years old, I moved to Maine and found another retail job. I love living in Maine, and it's wonderful living so close to the ocean when hosting my friends and family.

My husband Dwayne and I met 18 years ago on the "Scotia Prince" cruise when it was operating in Portland. We have been married 14 years and have two boys, William (13) and Samuel (11). When William was a baby, we found out that he had a genetic disorder called "Neurofibromatosis, Type 1 (NF1)." This disorder caused his leg to be weak-boned and bowed, and ultimately his leg broke and could not heal. When he was 5 years old, we made the excruciating decision to have his leg amputated below the knee. We made it through this scary time with the wonderful prayers from the congregation of our church- "The New Life Church of Biddeford," and from an outpouring of help and support from the community of Old Orchard Beach. I sincerely want to thank the whole town, because there were a number of anonymous donations made to help our family. My friend Kathryn Smith planned amazing fundraising events to help with our family's medical bills. Paul Provencher and Kenny Blow helped build a porch for us with a detachable handicap ramp when William was in a wheelchair and too heavy for me to carry. Dave Twomey donated lumber. There was a craft fair and we were given money for Christmas gifts for our children. My friend, Beverly Russell, was an angel. With the help of the "Old Orchard Beach Community Animal Watch," she took our dogs to the veterinarian and paid for our vet bills. During this difficult time for my family, there was just an incredible outpouring of love from the community and these were only a handful of examples. Praise God for planting these wonderful people in our lives. Their kindness was an incredible blessing in our lives, and we will never forget everyone's generosity and love. Before his amputation, William had to use a walker to get around. I am happy to report that William has a prosthetic leg now that hinders him very little- he runs around with ease and he even takes Taekwondo.

For 7 years, I was a stay-at-home mom in order to take care of my sons. On the side, I worked for "Mary Kay Inc," teaching skincare and makeup applications, which boosted my personal self-esteem and also helped us financially. Mary Kay teaches "God first, family second, and career third," and when I decided to put my life in that order, everything just seemed to work out for me. Mary Kay is an absolute passion of mine and I love getting together with women friends and "playing" with makeup. I love helping women come into their own personal confidence and unique beauty. Eventually, I applied to work at the US Postal Service. I have worked as a window clerk in Old Orchard Beach for almost 4 years now, while still enjoying my Mary Kay business part-time.
We lived in a mobile home for 15 years. As my boys got older, we were quickly out-growing our space. Two years ago, we started looking for a house and then the pandemic hit Maine. I was constantly keeping an eye on the housing market. Sometimes I would just drive by a house and say, “that would be a perfect house for us.” Well, with all of our waiting and working, God came through with one of my favorite houses in Old Orchard Beach. It was a house I had driven past multiple times, dreaming of the day it would be ours. We put in an offer three times, and finally, in the third round of negotiations, we were chosen. The house was officially ours at the end of October 2021! We thank God for this incredible blessing. We are so excited to officially have roots here in Old Orchard Beach. The school has been amazing for my children and the community has been wonderful to our family.
In our time of strife, I once told my husband that I needed a verse I could remember whenever
I was feeling down or depressed and needed encouragement.
I wanted something that I could recite and speak to myself. My husband gave me my now favorite quote from the Bible to memorize...
Isaiah 41:13 - "For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you."
It is truly the theme of our life story and words to live by.

Another favorite quotes is:
Desire backed by faith knows no such word as impossible.
- Napoleon Hill
