Women's History Month

Today, for the "Women's History Month" Campaign we are celebrating this strong and resilient woman:

Meet Dr. Celine Ferland, 72, mother of 3, grandmother, nurse practitioner.

"Follow your instinct and heart for your goal."

I was born on 06/18/1953 in Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, and was raised as a Catholic French Canadian in Greenfield Park, a town on the South Shore of Montreal. At the age of 2 years, I was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and went to physical therapy three times a week for the following 10 years. St-Justine Hospital became my second home, and there I decided to become a nurse.

I graduated with a registered nurse degree (or an associate's degree in the USA) in 1975 and worked in the labor and delivery and emergency departments of a local hospital for the following 10 years. In 1985, an exciting opportunity to move to Maine became a great adventure when my former husband was hired at the University of Maine in Orono to teach Canadian History. The excitement faded when I realized I was not speaking, reading, or writing fluently in English. Further, getting an RN license in Maine was impossible without mastering Shakespeare's language.

Six years later, I went to the University of Maine in Orono and decided to have a one on-one tutor to learn English. I finally received my RN license in Maine in 1999, eventually graduating with my BSN in 2004, my MSN in 2012, and my doctorate degree in nursing practice in 2025, at the age of 72. Since obtaining my license in Maine, I have worked in hospitals and nursing homes, and I am currently conducting in-home evaluations and Assessments on behalf of health insurance.

My life achievement was pursuing my nursing education to the highest level, never giving up amid difficult challenges, and raising three beautiful children at the same time. Nursing has always been my passion, and I will remain involved in geriatric care by attending seminars and conferences as long as I breathe. Today, I am a member of Sigma Theta Tau and have been recognized as a leader in Medicine by America’s Best in Medicine professional magazine.
